Study Unit 1 - The value of music for the holistic development of foundation phase learners

Music ..... Gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination ..... and life to everything.” - Plato

This week, I'm feeling especially enthusiastic about the upcoming semester. My work is being completed on schedule. I've completed three mathematics tests and scored above 80% on each of them. I'm working on the WIL project with my group, and we're making progress every day. I still have time to go to the gym and do my chores around the house. This week, nothing stood in the way of me studying and finishing my tasks. I was able to complete all my obligations. That's a fantastic feeling. I've answered the questions about study unit 1 in the section below. Question 2 was a lot of fun to answer because it gave me the opportunity to make a choice.

1.     Would you please describe your confidence in your current knowledge and skills to teach music through movement in the Foundation Phase as you start your LSKM 221 journey? In your answer, please also refer to your confidence to integrate music into your teaching practice currently.

Some people see children shouting at the top of their lungs or pounding noisily on an instrument when they think of children participating in music and movement. Many people are unaware that music and movement, like math, science, reading, and writing, play a vital part in a child's development and provide several advantages. Children are naturally drawn to music and will begin to react to it at a young age. As they get older, their love of music will offer one of the most evident advantages of music and movement for children: the release of energy. Children may have fun, be creative, dance about, and burn off some energy when they participate in music and movement activities. Children's social skills are developed and refined when they participate in group music and dance activities. They learn how to collaborate as a group, how to share, and how to be creative in a group setting.

I would incorporate music into my teaching practice because of benefits for learners such as:

  •         Small motor skills are being developed.
  •         Large motor skills are being developed.
  •         Learning to convey one's feelings.
  •         Balance and coordination are being improved.

2.      Both music and physical education play important roles in the holistic development of the young learner. However, if you must choose between incorporating Music education OR Physical education in the Foundation Phase curriculum to meet the holistic development needs of learners, which would you choose? In your answer, please explain which would be the best choice to ensure the opportunity for the holistic development of the learner and motivate your answer.

I'd make use of both. Music would be used to complement physical education. Music, with its concordance with the movements, is one of the ways that can contribute to the development of PE lessons. Students' physical and mental health can be improved by instilling healthy physical exercise habits in them. One method to accomplish this is to include tunes that will keep them moving. Music in physical education classrooms may motivate pupils and create a positive atmosphere. Music in physical education classes may have the same effect as hearing your favorite song, but it doesn't have to be about dancing. Music can be played in the background. Students can get ready to move by just listening to music while stretching. Similarly, playing music during sporting events might encourage kids to move around more.
